Logistic(s) as an art of planning

November 10, 2023

The beginning of the concept of logistics is considered to be the military field, where the main purpose was to supply combat equipment and material. First, the term logistics was defined as the science of planning, management and control of material, information and financial flow in various systems. We can mention that the term has an interesting etymology.

Logistics is mainly used in two meanings, on the one hand, If we’re talking about the overall process of getting things from point A to point B, then logistics is the correct term. If we’re referring to a specific aspect of that process, such as the logistical challenges of transporting a large shipment of goods, then logistic would be appropriate.

Both terms are related to supply chain management with different scopes.   Logistics refers to the specific activities or functions involved in managing the flow of goods from one point to another including tasks like transportation management (shipping and delivery), inventory control (storage and distribution), order fulfilment (picking and packing), reverse logistics (returns handling), and supply chain optimization.

Whereas Logistic refers to the process of planning, implementing, and controlling the efficient flow of goods, services, and information from point A to point B and its focus is coordination and management of various activities such as transportation, warehousing, inventory management, and packaging. Simply, logistic is a singular noun that describes the overall process or concept.

To summary,, logistics is about strategy while logistics deals with execution. Logistic sets out a plan for how things should be done whereas logistics involves carrying out those plans in a practical sense.

Here are some examples to understand the concepts better:

• The logistic challenges of transporting goods across the country are immense.

• The success of the project depended on the efficient logistics of moving personnel to the construction site.
